Faqs

  • When you come from StartupManager, remove it from the System Settings Login items and then delete StartupManager.
Startup Manager Pro uses Sparkle to manage its updates and StartupManager is now obsolete.
  • Disable “Automatically launch at login” for the items you add to Startup Manager Pro when they offer to do so in their Settings to prevent double starts.
  • Due to changes in Xcode (the development environment) and macOS(?) the dialog on login was no longer displayed for new builds of StartupManager. So I had to reinvent the way the program started at login.
Startup Manager Pro creates a Launch Agent (~/Library/LaunchAgents/fr.arievanboxel.startupmanagerpro.plist) and thereafter the program uses that Agent to start at login.
  • The application cannot be distributed via the Mac App Store, because Apple doesn’t allow to manipulate Login Items. Although Startup Manager Pro isn’t sandboxed it is notarized by Apple.
Apple introduced app notarization as part of its security measures to ensure that software distributed outside the Mac App Store is trustworthy and free from malicious content.
  • Startup Manager Pro can import the existing Login Items from your System Settings. Unfortunately, it is not possible to import mounted servers.
You can always drag a mounted disk onto Startup Manager Pro and it will nicely start when you login.
  • The item names (which can be changed) appear in red when the application isn’t running anymore, the name is striked through when it will not be started at the next login.
  • Some applications cannot be hidden after startup, though most do. There can be various reasons for this, but when an application refuses to hide, I attempt to do so using AppleScript. To enable this, the application must be granted permission in the System Settings to use Automation.
  • When you drag a network volume to the list, use a smb mounted volume.
  • Toggle the Wifi symbol for a Login Item when the item needs a network connection.
If there’s no network available, the Login Item will not be started. You can override this behaviour in the Settings.
  • Create as many Login Sets as you require: one tailored for your work environment, another designed for use at home, and yet another for public spaces.
  • Startup Manager Pro is only available for macOS 14.0 and higher. Because of the many security risks these days, I think it is wise to use an up-to-date version of macOS.
